The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has identified that the recent bluish discoloration in the Nabua stream was a result of dye being improperly discharged into the sewer system. This incident has sparked renewed calls for the community to take responsibility in waste disposal practices.

The dye became apparent after the Nabua pump station experienced a trip and subsequently overflowed, leading to contaminated wastewater entering the stream. WAF’s chief executive officer, Seru Soderberg, indicated that this event coincided with a temporary shutdown at the pump station, which handles wastewater from the central business district.

While the situation was promptly resolved, it revealed persistent issues associated with improper waste disposal. Mr. Soderberg emphasized the severe environmental risks posed by dumping chemicals and other banned substances into the wastewater system, particularly during overflow situations. “It has an impact on the environment, or it actually breaks the infrastructure itself, and it’s costing taxpayers money to get it fixed,” he stated.

The authority regularly encounters inappropriate items within the sewer network, such as rags, shoes, blankets, and sanitary products, all of which contribute to blockages, system malfunctions, and overflows. “What we just request is better behaviour,” he urged, encouraging the public to dispose of waste correctly.

Mr. Soderberg also noted the detrimental effect of chemicals on the wastewater treatment process, stating that chemicals can kill the beneficial bacteria necessary for effective treatment, leading to unpleasant odors, particularly in Kinoya. He reiterated that improving public behavior is essential for safeguarding infrastructure, environmental health, and public safety.

The call for responsible waste disposal is a reminder of the importance of community involvement in environmental protection and the maintenance of vital infrastructure. By taking proactive steps to dispose of waste correctly, residents can contribute to a healthier and more sustainable environment for all.
