Waqasaqa Votuwale is celebrating a moment of pride as his daughter, Maraia Vuniwaqa, was awarded the dux of Valebasoga Secondary School in Labasa. This significant achievement came during the school’s prizegiving ceremony, where the 18-year-old scored an impressive 405 out of 500 in her Year 13 annual examination.

Mr. Votuwale, a 55-year-old kava farmer from Bouma Village in Taveuni, shared the sacrifices he and his wife made for their children’s educational success. The couple decided to move to Valebasoga, Labasa, leaving behind their village life to ensure their children could access better educational opportunities.

“It wasn’t an easy decision for our family,” explained Mr. Votuwale, who takes pride in being the sole provider. “I had to put my children’s needs first. My wife and I didn’t complete secondary education because of financial challenges, but I didn’t want that to hold my children back.”

Maraia’s achievement is no unexpected feat, as her dedication has been evident throughout her education. She also earned the dux title in the Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination. Expressing her gratitude, she aims to pursue a career in accounting and is motivated to honor her parents’ sacrifices.

“As the head girl, I kept reminding myself to set a good example, and that is why I aimed for the dux award,” she stated. “I am thankful for my parents’ sacrifices, and I will surely make them proud.”

This story highlights the commitment and resilience of a family dedicated to education, showcasing how their sacrifices have paid off. It also serves as an inspiration to many students and parents, reminding them that determination and hard work can lead to remarkable achievements.
