Moana Liebregts, a dedicated third-year medical student and accomplished basketball player, is preparing to represent Fiji in the 2025 Pacific Mini Games. At just 22, she is balancing her rigorous medical studies with her commitments as an elite athlete, showcasing an inspiring dedication to both her academic and athletic pursuits.

Moana’s day begins early, with her in classes and clinical rounds by 6 AM, followed by late-night study sessions. She is no stranger to competitive basketball, having represented Fiji in several tournaments since she was 15 years old, including the FIBA U15 Oceania Championships and the FIBA U16 Asian Championship. However, this will be her first experience at the Pacific Mini Games, and she is eager to make a significant impact.

As she prepares for the games, Moana expresses gratitude for the support from Basketball Fiji and her coach as she and her team work on their fitness and offensive plays. The dynamics of the team are shifting as they welcome a new player, Makaefa, and they are collaborating to integrate her into their strategies. Moana found her passion for basketball through her three brothers, who also played, and she now inspires the next generation by coaching younger girls.

The Pacific Mini Games, scheduled for June 29 to July 9, represent a crucial opportunity not just for Moana but for Team Fiji to showcase their talents and potentially bring home gold. Her dual commitment to both sport and education serves as a motivational example for young athletes, proving that with dedication and time management, one can pursue multiple passions successfully.

Moana’s journey, along with that of her teammates, embodies the spirit of resilience and determination that is characteristic of Fiji’s athletic community. As they prepare for the upcoming games, there is a shared hope for success and community pride in their performances.
