Fiji Airways Fijiana Women’s Sevens team head coach Richard Walker has provided an insightful update regarding the team’s performance following their recent outings in Dubai and Cape Town.
In reflecting on the Dubai tournament, Walker noted that the team was eager to compete after an intense pre-season training period. “We played some really good rugby and got a couple of wins early, which just squeaked us through to the semi-finals. That was really pleasing for the team and for our friends, family, and fans around the world,” he stated. The Fijiana team demonstrated strong resilience, ultimately securing a top-four finish in Dubai, which Walker described as a promising start to their campaign.
The subsequent tournament in Cape Town, however, presented a different set of challenges. After a week of recovery and training sessions, Walker explained that “a couple of scores and errors just didn’t go our way,” leading to a failure to reach the top four as they had in Dubai. Despite this setback, the team concluded the tournament on a high note by defeating Great Britain, which Walker found encouraging.
Looking ahead, Walker emphasized that while there were positive takeaways from both tournaments, there are also areas that require improvement. “We came away with some good positives but also some really good work-ons that we hope to work through before our next tournaments in Singapore and Perth,” he remarked.
As the holiday season approaches, the coach stressed the importance of maintaining focus. “We’re looking forward to the Christmas and New Year break, but we also know that we need to work over those periods and get ready for the next camp,” he said.
With upcoming tournaments on the horizon, the Fijiana Women’s Sevens team remains committed to building momentum and preparing for the challenges that lie ahead, showcasing their determination and unity as they strive for success.
