Early this morning, five individuals narrowly avoided serious injury following a motor vehicle accident in Saqani. The incident occurred around 2 am in Delaivatu, where the driver is suspected of operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana.

The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road. While four passengers were treated at the scene and sent home, one was taken to Savusavu Hospital for further evaluation. SSP Divuana has emphasized the dangers associated with drinking and driving, highlighting the numerous risks posed to all road users.

From January 1 to November 15 of this year, a total of 272 drivers have been apprehended for driving under the influence, an alarming statistic that underscores the potential hazards on the road. SSP Divuana urges drivers and pedestrians alike to adopt a more responsible attitude toward road safety, especially as the festive season approaches, which typically includes celebrations that may involve alcohol consumption.

The officer cautions that choosing to drink and drive can lead to devastating consequences, including injury or even death, as it impairs one’s ability to focus and react appropriately while behind the wheel. He advocates for a collective commitment to road safety, emphasizing that everyone plays a role in protecting themselves and others during this festive period.

With the holiday season approaching, there is hope that increased awareness about the dangers of alcohol consumption and its effects on driving may lead to safer roads for all. By fostering a culture of responsibility, we can work together to reduce accidents and ensure that celebrations are both enjoyable and safe for everyone involved.
