Five individuals were fortunate to escape serious injuries following a motor vehicle accident in Saqani early this morning. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the accident took place in Delaivatu after 2 AM, with reports suggesting that the driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road.

Among the four passengers, one was taken to Savusavu Hospital for further treatment, while the others received care at the scene and were subsequently released.

SSP Divuana emphasized the significant dangers associated with drinking and driving, urging drivers to heed warnings to prevent future incidents. He noted that between January 1 and November 15, 2024, a total of 272 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence, highlighting the critical risks that such behavior presents not only to the driver but also to innocent road users.

As the festive season approaches, SSP Divuana calls on drivers and pedestrians alike to adopt a renewed mindset regarding road safety. He underscored that choices involving alcohol consumption while driving can lead to severe consequences, including injury or death, due to impaired concentration and coordination.

The festive season is a time often filled with celebrations, which can increase the likelihood of alcohol consumption. To protect lives and prevent further tragedies, the Director of Traffic insists that all road users—drivers, passengers, and pedestrians—must embrace shared responsibility for road safety.

In summary, this incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of responsible behavior on the roads, especially during a season associated with festivities and social gatherings. By adopting better road safety practices, we can all contribute to a safer environment for everyone.

It is essential that both individuals and communities recognize the profound impact of their choices and work towards creating a culture of safety on the roads during this cheerful time of year.
