Five individuals narrowly escaped serious injuries in a vehicle accident that took place in Saqani early this morning. The incident, which occurred after 2 a.m. in Delaivatu, is believed to have involved a driver who was under the influence of alcohol, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana.
Preliminary reports suggest that the driver lost control of the vehicle, leading it to veer off the road. While one of the four passengers required transportation to Savusavu Hospital for further evaluation, the remaining occupants received treatment at the scene and were subsequently released.
SSP Divuana emphasized the dangers posed by drinking and driving, urging all drivers to heed road safety warnings. He highlighted a concerning statistic: from January 1, 2024, to November 15, 272 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence, each one endangering not only their own lives but also the lives of innocent road users.
As the festive season approaches, SSP Divuana is calling for a shift in mindset regarding road safety. He warns that choosing to drink and drive can lead to severe consequences, including injury or death, due to impaired focus and coordination. He advocates for a collective responsibility towards road safety among drivers, passengers, and pedestrians, especially during a time characterized by celebrations and alcohol consumption.
This article serves as a timely reminder that practicing road safety is essential, particularly during high-risk periods like the holiday season. By prioritizing safe driving habits, we can work together to minimize accidents and ensure that everyone arrives home safely.
