The escalating drug problem in Fiji has reached alarming levels, according to Baron Waqa, the secretary general of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF).
Expressing deep concern, Waqa emphasized the forum’s commitment to supporting regional leaders in addressing this critical issue. He underscored the gravity of the situation, noting that drug-related challenges in Fiji have become increasingly severe.
“We are very, very concerned about the drug issue here in Fiji,” Waqa stated. “The issue of drugs is really getting out of hand, and the forum has a lot to offer in discussions, policy reforms, writing out the framework, and helping countries.”
Waqa highlighted PIF’s role in facilitating discussions, advocating for policy reforms, and establishing frameworks to assist member countries in effectively combating drug issues. He stressed the importance of coordinating intelligence efforts and fostering collaborative approaches among member states.
Acknowledging the transnational nature of drug trafficking, Waqa said, “There is the need for coordinated efforts across borders.”
“There are certain people in our forum who are in a better position to handle this. But don’t forget, that these problems come from further off. So, we will be working into coordinating the Talanoa and whatever is required by certain governments to make sure these issues are thrashed out, debated, and addressed. We need to work with each other and assist each other with this problem.”
