This year, a total of 18 individuals have been apprehended on drug-related charges, highlighting ongoing challenges in the fight against illicit drug use. Among those arrested are two juveniles who faced charges on New Year’s Day and a woman taken into custody this morning.
On January 1st, a 17-year-old student was caught near Lami Village with a zip lock bag and five sachets containing dried leaves, suspected to be marijuana. A 16-year-old student from Nauluvatu was also arrested that day for possessing 11 similar sachets. Other arrests included a 30-year-old baker and a 35-year-old farmer found with multiple sachets of dried leaves in different locations.
Throughout the following days, law enforcement continued its efforts, resulting in more arrests. For instance, a police patrol in Lautoka led to the arrest of four young men with 48 sachets of dried leaves. Additionally, two men were arrested in Suva and Kinoya for possessing methamphetamine. A police team also discovered 334 marijuana plants during a training exercise in Tukavesi.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu emphasized the importance of community involvement in combating drug-related issues. Acknowledging support from local leaders and community groups, he noted that sustained collaboration is crucial for curbing drug abuse.
