Drug Busts on the Rise: What’s Happening This Year?

This year, law enforcement has apprehended 18 individuals involved in drug-related offenses, including two juveniles and several adults with various connections to the community. Notably, on New Year’s Day, a 17-year-old student was intercepted in Lami Village, possessing a zip-lock bag with dried leaves and additional sachets believed to be marijuana. Another student, aged 16 from Nauluvatu, was found with multiple sachets of the same substance.

In Labasa, a 30-year-old baker and a 35-year-old farmer were also arrested for holding multiple sachets of marijuana. Additionally, an unemployed 42-year-old man was caught at the Labasa market taxi stand, further indicating the widespread issue of drug possession in the area. The trend continued with multiple arrests at Labasa Market involving various individuals, all linked to marijuana possession.

During a patrol operation, police apprehended four young men along the Queens Road in Lautoka, who were in possession of a significant amount of marijuana. The police efforts did not stop, leading to additional arrests, including a 58-year-old man in Suva and two individuals in Nausori and Waqadra suspected of carrying methamphetamine.

In a significant discovery, police uncovered 334 marijuana plants during a training exercise in Tukavesi. The arrests also included a female who was caught with methamphetamine during a recent operation.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, emphasized the importance of community collaboration in combating drug abuse, highlighting efforts to receive information from local leaders concerned about the future of their youth. He reiterated the ongoing commitment to fighting the drug epidemic, recognizing that support from the entire community is crucial.

This proactive approach reflects a community’s collective resolve to address drug-related issues and safeguard future generations. With continuous police efforts and community involvement, there is hope for a positive shift toward reducing drug-related incidents in the area. The collaboration between law enforcement and community leaders is a promising strategy in the fight against drug abuse.
