Three students were among thirteen individuals arrested yesterday on charges of possessing illicit drugs. The arrests occurred at two different school locations, drawing attention to the ongoing issue of drug use among youth.
According to Police Assistant Commissioner Livai Driu, an investigation is underway at another school where smoking paraphernalia were discovered in the dining hall. The school manager promptly reported the situation to the authorities, highlighting the crucial role of educators in maintaining a safe environment for students. Driu expressed appreciation for the collaboration of teachers and reaffirmed the commitment to enforcing the law.
In related incidents, authorities apprehended a 33-year-old carpenter and a 47-year-old security guard at the Nadonumai Roadblock after they were found with small plastic bags containing white crystals. Additionally, four individuals were arrested in Waiyavi, Lautoka, during a police raid that uncovered white crystals, drug paraphernalia, and cash suspected to be linked to drug sales.
Further arrests included a 32-year-old mechanic in Waimalika Sabeto with six bags of white crystals, and a 29-year-old man from Semo, Sigatoka, found with seven branches of what is believed to be marijuana at a bus shelter. A 46-year-old farmer from Navosa was also taken into custody at the Nadi Bus Stand with 161 branches of suspected marijuana along with cash presumed to be from drug transactions. Moreover, a 24-year-old man from Natutu, Ba, was arrested at the Ba Market Area with eight sachets of dried leaves thought to be marijuana wrapped in aluminum foil.
All suspects are currently in police custody with the seized drugs pending analysis, as investigations continue.
