A 31-year-old unemployed man from Kinoya has been arrested for unlawful possession of illicit drugs following a police search of passengers on a shipping vessel. The vessel had arrived from a maritime island when police conducted a thorough inspection and discovered that the man was carrying a blue bag containing four parcels of dried leaves, which are believed to be marijuana.

Additionally, the police team, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu, found more illegal substances, including 7 sealed zip-lock plastic bags, 44 zip-lock bags, and 572 branches of dried leaves wrapped in a black sulu. These items were left unclaimed by anyone on the vessel.

In his remarks, ACP Driu underscored the ongoing commitment to combat drug trafficking, stating, “Our search on shipping vessels will continue in our efforts to eradicate drugs.” He also revealed that police have initiated operations to uproot marijuana plants in various maritime islands, including Lau, Levuka, Gau, and Taveuni, thanks to the information shared by community stakeholders.

These recent policing efforts emphasize the determination of law enforcement in Fiji to address illicit drug use and keep communities safe. The proactive stance displayed in apprehending suspects and confiscating drugs not only aims to curb drug-related activities but also fosters collaboration between the police and the community, raising awareness about the dangers of drug use.

In summary, the arrest and confiscation reflect a significant operation that contributes to a safer environment. The continuous efforts of law enforcement, supported by local communities, inspire hope for a reduction in drug trafficking and an overall healthier society.
