Police in the Northern Division have arrested five individuals, including a businessman aged 50, in connection with drug-related offenses over the past two days. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, confirmed the arrests regarding suspected marijuana possession.

On Friday, December 27, officers discovered marijuana leaves hanging on the walls of a house in Naweni Village, Savusavu. A male suspect was taken into custody, and the dried leaves have been retained for analysis.

The following day, four additional suspects were apprehended in various locations throughout Labasa. In Tuatua, the 50-year-old businessman was caught with two sachets of what is believed to be marijuana, wrapped in aluminum foil. A 20-year-old student from Batinivuruwai, Bua, was found with a single sachet of similar contents. At the Naduna Settlement, a 55-year-old farmer and a 35-year-old woman were discovered with multiple containers of dried leaves also believed to be marijuana.

All seized substances are currently undergoing analysis as authorities continue their crackdown on drug-related activities, particularly during the festive season.

This vigilance by the police not only aims to tackle drug issues during a time often associated with celebrations but also highlights an ongoing commitment to community safety. The initiative could foster positive changes in public health and safety, reinforcing the message that drug-related activities will not be tolerated.

Overall, the actions taken by law enforcement may serve as a reminder to the community about the risks associated with drug use, potentially guiding at-risk individuals toward healthier choices during the holidays.
