Authorities in Labasa have recently made several arrests related to the possession of illegal drugs at the municipal market, a proactive measure taken since the beginning of the year. The Acting Divisional Police Commander (DPC) North, Superintendent of Police Eroni Soqosoqo, emphasized that these arrests serve as a stern warning to those involved in drug trafficking.

Among those apprehended, a 35-year-old farmer from Kilikoso was found in possession of nine sachets filled with dried leaves suspected to be marijuana. Additionally, a 42-year-old unemployed man was arrested at the Labasa Market Taxi Stand for similar offenses. Another individual, a 40-year-old man from Qelewaqa, was taken into custody at the Labasa Bus Stand with 11 sachets of the same substance. The police also arrested a chef from Valebasogo after discovering four sachets of dried leaves believed to be marijuana.

Further efforts in the Tukavesi area led to the discovery of containers containing 334 green plants, also thought to be marijuana. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu noted that drug-related arrests are a frequent occurrence and extended gratitude to village headmen and community leaders for their valuable tips that assist in these operations.

The local community is responding positively to the police’s actions. Waisea Makulau, vice-president of the Labasa Market Vendors and Farmers Association, praised the law enforcement for their commitment and encouraged continued vigilance against those using market spaces for illegal activities. The proactive stance taken by the police not only helps enhance public safety but also reflects a collective effort against drug abuse in the region.

This concerted effort by law enforcement serves as a hopeful sign that the community can come together to address the challenges posed by illicit drugs, fostering a safer and healthier environment for all residents moving forward.
