Police in Labasa have made a series of arrests linked to the possession of illegal drugs at the municipal market, starting from January 1. The Acting Divisional Police Commander (DPC) North, Superintendent of Police (SP) Eroni Soqosoqo, emphasized that these actions aim to serve as a stern warning to drug dealers in the area.

Recently, a 35-year-old farmer from Kilikoso was apprehended with nine sachets containing dried leaves that are believed to be marijuana. Additionally, a 42-year-old unemployed man from Qelewaqa was arrested at the Labasa Market Taxi Stand under similar circumstances. Another individual, a 40-year-old from Qelewaqa, was taken into custody at the Labasa Bus Stand with 11 sachets of dried leaves also believed to be marijuana. A chef from Valebasogo was arrested on January 2 for possessing four sachets of the same substance.

In a related operation in Tukavesi, Cakaudrove, police seized containers holding 334 green plants that are also suspected to be marijuana.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu noted that drug-related arrests occur daily, expressing gratitude towards village leaders and community heads for their timely information that aids in these operations.

This proactive stance by law enforcement not only aims to curb drug-related activities but also seeks to protect the local community and ensure that public spaces, like the market, are used for legitimate purposes. The collaboration between the police and community members showcases the commitment to creating a safer environment for everyone.

As these efforts continue, there is hope that a stronger sense of community vigilance will further diminish illegal drug trade activities and foster a healthier, safer atmosphere in Labasa.
