Police in the Northern Division have arrested five individuals connected to drug-related offenses in recent days, including a notable 50-year-old businessman. This update was reported by Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu.

On December 27, authorities conducted a raid in Naweni Village, Savusavu, where they discovered branches of leaves suspected to be marijuana hanging in a residence. A male suspect was apprehended, and the seized leaves are currently pending analysis to confirm their nature.

The following day, law enforcement carried out additional arrests in various locations in Labasa. Among those detained was a 50-year-old businessman in Tuatua, who possessed two sachets of dried leaves believed to be marijuana, meticulously wrapped in aluminum foil. A 20-year-old student from Batinivuruwai, Bua, was also arrested with a similar sachet.

At the Naduna Settlement, a 55-year-old farmer and a 35-year-old woman were found with a sealed plastic bag, a sachet, and a jar containing dried leaves suspected to be marijuana. All of the confiscated materials have been sent for further analysis.

ACP Driu emphasized that police efforts will intensify with ongoing drug raids and special operations throughout the festive season to combat illicit drug abuse effectively.

This proactive law enforcement approach is crucial, especially during times when substance abuse can become more prevalent. The community’s safety and well-being depend on sustained vigilance against illegal drugs. Alongside the arrests, the focus on analysis and subsequent actions will ensure that offenders are held accountable while fostering a healthier environment for all residents.
