The Queen Victoria School Old Boys Association (QVSOB) has secured a generous sponsorship of $4,000 from Pacific Energy for this year’s Druavesi golf tournament. The cheque was presented by Amit Maharaj, the chief marketing officer of Pacific Energy, to Alipate Ledua, the president of QVSOB, and Sai Tokalau, the tournament organizer.
This year’s Druavesi tournament, now in its 31st year, is anticipated to attract between 80 to 200 players, including participants from across Fiji, as far as Labasa. Unlike previous years, the competition will open its doors to alumni from various schools, making it a more inclusive event. The Fiji Golf Club is also expected to field its own team in the tournament.
Ledua expressed his heartfelt thanks for the ongoing support from Pacific Energy, which has been backing the golf tournament since 2011. He highlighted the growing interest in the Druavesi tournament, reflected in the increasing number of participants. Maharaj noted how the integration of young golfers in last year’s event captured his interest and praised the opportunity given to secondary school golfers.
Tokalau, the tournament organizer, is optimistic that the event will motivate more students to participate in future tournaments, fostering a love for the game.
The one-day tournament is set to take place on Friday at the Fiji Golf Club in Vatuwaqa, Suva.
This sponsorship and the evolving format of the Druavesi tournament not only highlight the strong community spirit but also encourage youth engagement in sports, which can lead to lifelong benefits both personally and socially. By fostering teamwork and healthy competition, events like these have the potential to inspire the next generation of golfers.
