The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua’s recent journey to Napier, New Zealand, has sparked concerns among fans and players regarding the treatment they received before their important Super Rugby match against the Hurricanes. After a challenging, long-haul flight, the Drua arrived in Auckland only to discover that no bus was available to transport them to their accommodation. Consequently, players and staff were forced to travel in the back of a truck, enduring lengthy waits for their transport to arrive.

This lack of logistical support was compounded by the hotel denying the team a late checkout, leaving them with little option but to wait in the lobby or wander outside until it was time for their next engagement. In sharp contrast, the Hurricanes team was able to enjoy extended rest and comfort in their hotel rooms.

Former Fijian international winger Nemani Nadolo voiced his frustration on social media, remarking that the Drua had already lost the psychological battle upon landing in Auckland. He pointed out that this treatment is markedly different from the first-class hospitality Super Rugby teams receive when visiting Fiji, where they are often welcomed with police escorts and superior accommodations. This disparity raises questions about the treatment of teams based on location and highlights potential biases within the Super Rugby framework.

Drua captain Frank Lomani echoed Nadolo’s sentiments after their narrow 38-34 defeat to the Hurricanes, emphasizing that the team could have performed better had they been given equitable treatment. Despite the challenges, Lomani remained hopeful about their future performance, praising the team’s young talent and resilience as they prepare to face upcoming matches.

Head coach Glen Jackson also acknowledged the obstacles faced during their trip, including the setbacks related to travel and accommodation. Despite the disappointment of their loss to the Hurricanes, Jackson expressed pride in his team’s determination and the potential for growth moving forward. The team’s spirit and commitment to improvement promise a brighter outlook for the Drua as they strive to compete effectively in the Super Rugby Pacific.

As the Drua gear up for their next match, fans remain optimistic that the lessons learned from their recent experiences will fuel their ambition and tenacity throughout the season. With a focus on resilience and the development of young players, the Drua aim to turn past adversities into future successes, embodying the enduring spirit of rugby in Fiji.
