The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua is embracing a unique pre-season experience in Kadavu, where they are participating in a four-day camp as part of the Super Rugby Pacific preparation. The team arrived at the Namalata District School early yesterday morning, where they will be accommodated during their stay.
Upon arrival, the players were honored with a traditional welcome ceremony that included the mixing of kava, an experience many players found special and enlightening. Head coach Glen Jackson expressed appreciation for the warmth of Kadavu’s people and the delightful meals provided, specifically highlighting their fresh fish breakfast.
The journey to Kadavu itself was quite an adventure for the team, with some players encountering boat travel for the first time. Jackson noted the beautiful weather and described the boat ride as “eye-opening,” noting the mix of excitement and nerves from those unaccustomed to such experiences.
This marks the first time the Drua has taken their pre-season training away from the mainland, following a tradition set by the Flying Fijians who also ventured to Taveuni in preparation for the Rugby World Cup. The Drua will make their way back to Suva on Friday, likely taking with them fond memories and valuable experiences from their time in Kadavu.
This gathering not only emphasizes team bonding but also showcases the vibrant culture and hospitality of Fiji. Such experiences are crucial for fostering unity and preparation as the Drua eyes a successful season ahead.
