Drua’s Secret Weapon for Super Rugby: Fitness Focus Unveiled

Fitness is the top priority for the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua as they engage in their off-season training program. Drua head coach Glen Jackson emphasized the importance of fitness for success in Super Rugby during an interview.

“We can’t win Super Rugby if you’re not fit,” Jackson stated, adding that the strength and conditioning team, led by Master Naca Cawanibuka, has a significant opportunity to enhance the players’ fitness during this period. He noted that the players have shown remarkable improvement thus far.

Following a break after last season, Jackson mentioned that the players are now facing a demanding week of training. He highlighted that while the Flying Fijian players are preparing for their November tour, the development players have returned in good shape, though they are feeling the effects of intense running after a week and a half of training.

The presence of experienced coaches Tim Sampson and Chris Gibbes has further strengthened the Drua’s off-season training efforts. Jackson expressed his satisfaction in having these skilled coaches on board.

Gibbes, who previously served as the forwards coach for the Hurricanes, has a background that includes coaching Wellington to a premier division promotion in 2017, as well as roles with Japan, Georgia, and New Zealand Under-20 teams. Sampson was the head coach of Western Force before joining the Melbourne Rebels as an assistant coach in 2023.

Jackson praised Gibbes and Sampson for their familiarity with the Super Rugby competition and their eagerness to learn the players’ names and implement their strategies effectively from the beginning. He noted their motivation and enthusiasm for being part of the team.

Additionally, the Drua is considering a trip to Kadavu in December for training, community outreach, and team bonding activities. Jackson explained that the aim is to foster team unity both on and off the field.
