The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua’s backline for the 2024 Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific season faces a challenge with the absence of a dedicated second-five-eight following Kalaveti Ravouvou’s departure to Bristol’s Bears. This gap became evident during recent trials where Kemu Valetini, Apisalome Vota, and Michael Naitokani were rotated in the number 12 position.

Attacking coach Tim Sampson emphasized the importance of this role, stating that the connection between the number 10 and 12 players is crucial for team cohesion. He highlighted the arrival of Inia Tabuavou, noting his skills as a ball player, his physicality, and communication abilities as beneficial to the team’s strategy.

Sampson pointed to the experience of Valetini and Tuidraki Samusamuvodre as vital for bridging the play between the fly-half and the outside backs, taking on significant responsibility in executing the team’s game plan.

Looking towards the future, Sampson expressed optimism for the 2025 season. He feels encouraged by the commitment and fitness levels of the squad, especially during the Flying Fijians’ absence. With a focus on conditioning, he believes the team needs to perform better in away games to push for a top-four position in the league.

Additionally, the coaching staff’s structure has been confirmed, with Sampson as the attacking coach, Chris Gibbes overseeing the forwards, and Greg Flemming in charge of defense.

This period of adjustment offers the Drua an opportunity to refine their tactics and build stronger connections on the field. With dedicated training and strategic focus, there is hope for the team to rise in the competitive rankings as they continue to develop their players and overall gameplay.

In summary, while facing a significant challenge in the second-five-eight position, the Fijian Drua is taking proactive steps to strengthen their backline, emphasizing teamwork and thorough training, which may lead to a promising season ahead.
