Mick Byrne, head coach of the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua, believes that the refining of skills, physicality, and flair among players who were part of the FIJI Water Flying Fijians this year will significantly strengthen the team. He emphasizes that the Drua’s contributions have been vital, especially with a substantial number of their players participating in the Autumn Nations Test Series.
Coach Byrne stated, “I think Fiji Drua is definitely helping Fiji Rugby. They have those players coming in, training professionally week in and week out alongside our Northern Hemisphere players.” The Drua had 12 players participating in Fiji’s final Test match against Ireland, showcasing the team’s depth and talent. The notable players included co-captain Tevita Ikanivere, Mesake Vocevoce, Meli Derenalagi, Kitione Salawa, and several others.
Byrne highlighted that the integration of these players with seasoned professionals greatly benefits their development, particularly as the Fijian Drua enters its third year. He expressed optimism about the future of Fiji rugby, noting that having a professional side operating in the Southern Hemisphere and combining with experienced national team players enhances depth and prospects for success.
This collaboration presents a promising future for Fiji rugby, drawing on the strengths of both local and international experiences to cultivate a dynamic and competitive squad.
In summary, the synergy between the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua and the Flying Fijians represents a constructive step toward enhancing Fiji Rugby, setting the groundwork for further growth and achievement in the sport.
