The Fijian Swire Shipping Drua marked another landmark win by defeating the NSW Waratahs 28-14 at Churchill Park, extending their unbeaten streak at home to eight games. This victory is particularly vital as it keeps the Drua’s hopes alive in the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific competition, despite currently sitting at the bottom of the standings with 11 points.

Captain Mesulame Dolokoto praised his team’s resilience after the match, stating, “We didn’t give up, we kept trying and trusted each other and the game plan. This win is for our fans and for everyone celebrating Easter.” The match began with fly-half Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula converting two early penalties to put the Drua ahead. Flanker Motikiai Murray scored the opening try in the 22nd minute, showcasing a solid performance supported by a strong lead from the home crowd.

Despite a second-half comeback attempt from the Waratahs, who scored tries from Langi Gleeson and Julian Heaven, the Drua maintained control throughout the match. Their relentless physicality and strategic play were evident, particularly in the first half, where they held 66% possession and would ultimately finish with a capped penalty try sealing their victory.

The Waratahs, now facing their ninth consecutive away loss, struggled with discipline and suffered injuries to key players, which compounded their challenges. Coach Dan McKellar’s team thus found themselves clinging to sixth place on the table with 21 points.

Next, the Drua will be facing Moana Pasifika in another significant match on April 26 at North Harbour Stadium, Auckland. The Drua’s determination and the unwavering support from their fans highlight the potential for a promising finish to their season, which offers hope for an inspiring turnaround as they aim for a top-six finish in the league. The spirit of Fijian rugby resilience continues to shine through, inspiring both players and supporters alike.
