The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua is gearing up for the 2025 Shop N Save Super Rugby competition with plans to assemble a competitive squad. Forwards coach Chris Gibbes has indicated that the team has pinpointed two key positions that require reinforcement: No.6 and No.8.

Gibbes emphasized that rather than shifting existing players like Te Ahiwaru Cirikidaveta, affectionately known as ‘Big T’, into these positions, he prefers to utilize other talents for the roles. “We probably won’t look at that, but we have to be agile in this competition,” he stated.

A notable addition to the squad is the robust flanker Joseva Tamani, who returns to the Drua after a brief stint with the French club Colomiers. At 27 years old, Tamani is seen as a valuable asset, likely to fill one of the identified positions. He has a strong track record, having made 13 appearances for the Drua during the 2022 season, and is recognized for his speed and ability to capitalize on loose balls during matches.

The team is also development-focused, as young player Isoa Tuwai, who competes for Suva Rugby, is expected to contribute significantly. Tuwai has attracted attention in the rugby community for his impressive transition from inside centre to flanker and is lauded for his talent.

Gibbes remarked on the versatility of the players: “At the moment, the good thing about players is that they can play multiple positions.” He reiterated the goal of strengthening the team with Tamani’s skills and the promising potential of Tuwai.

The Drua aims to build on their previous successes, having reached the Shop N Save Super Rugby quarterfinals for two consecutive years. They are set to showcase their growing talent at the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens, taking place at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka from January 16-18 next year.

Young athletes with aspirations to join the Drua 7s include Isikeli Rabitu, Philip Baselala, Aisea Nawai, Simeli Tuiteci, Maika Tuitubou, Breyton Legge, Isikeli Basiyalo, and Jack Volavola. The team will compete against several formidable opponents, including the Seattle Barbarians and the All Blacks 7s, in what promises to be an exciting rugby festival.

As the Drua take a brief hiatus to spend time with their families and friends, the groundwork is being laid for a strong comeback next year, building a bright future for the team.

Summary: The Fijian Drua prepares for the 2025 Super Rugby season, targeting reinforcements in the No.6 and No.8 positions while welcoming back Joseva Tamani and promoting young talent like Isoa Tuwai. The squad aims to enhance their performance after solid quarterfinal finishes and will showcase their skills at the upcoming Coral Coast Sevens. The team’s continued development and focus on recruitment highlight a promising future.
