The Fijian Drua rugby squad recently held a pre-season camp and team bonding activity in Kadavu, which was described as a pivotal move in laying the groundwork for a successful 2025 season. Nacani Cawanibuka, the head of athletic performance for the Drua, emphasized that the four-day retreat has fostered a closer bond among team members.
As part of their bonding experience, the team engaged in a community service project, painting the ablutions block at Namalata Central School following a boat race exercise earlier in the week. Cawanibuka, a two-time Olympic trainer, noted the significance of this initiative as they gear up for their fourth season in Super Rugby Pacific.
“This is a groundbreaking effort for us as the Drua,” Cawanibuka stated. “We aim to instill values in our team culture, cultivating better versions of ourselves and striving for a stronger Drua in the upcoming season, God willing.”
He highlighted the importance of teamwork, mentioning that the painting project was intended to unify the players and give back to the local school and community.
“We view this as a way to finish the year on a high note, working together with enthusiasm and joy, while also connecting with the local community in Kadavu,” he added. Cawanibuka also pointed out the therapeutic nature of the painting activity, suggesting it helps to relax the mind and facilitates bonding among the players.
The Drua team and management will return home today, filled with new memories and a strengthened team spirit.
This initiative showcases how sports teams can effectively engage with their communities while building camaraderie among players. It sets a positive precedent for teamwork and social responsibility, reflecting the Drua’s commitment to not only excel in rugby but also to leave a lasting impact on their community.
In summary, this positive team-building exercise underscores the spiritual and social dimensions of sports, creating a compelling foundation for success as the Drua moves forward into the next season.
