Fitness is a key focus for the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua during their off-season training program. Head coach Glen Jackson emphasized this priority in an interview, stating that physical fitness is essential for success in Super Rugby. He mentioned the valuable time strength and conditioning coaches, including Master Naca Cawanibuka, have to work with the players to enhance their performance.
Jackson noted that players are experiencing a demanding training regimen following a break after the last season. He acknowledged that while the Flying Fijian players are preparing for the upcoming November tour, the development squad has returned in good shape, though they are now feeling the effects of intensive training.
The off-season efforts have been bolstered by the recruitment of seasoned assistant coaches Tim Sampson and Chris Gibbes. Jackson expressed his satisfaction with their contributions, highlighting their experience and ability to adapt to a new team dynamic.
Gibbes previously served as an assistant coach for the Hurricanes and was instrumental in Wellington’s promotion to the premier division. His coaching resume also includes roles with Japan, Georgia, and New Zealand Under-20 teams. Sampson, on the other hand, has experience as the head coach of Western Force and has recently been an assistant coach for the Melbourne Rebels.
Jackson praised both coaches for their familiarity with the Super Rugby competition and their enthusiastic integration into the team. He also mentioned plans for the Drua to travel to Kadavu in December for training, community outreach, and team bonding activities, underlining the importance of unity both on and off the field.
