Fitness is a top priority for the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua during their off-season training program. Drua head coach Glen Jackson emphasized this focus in an interview, stating, “We can’t win Super Rugby if you’re not fit.” He noted that the team’s strength and conditioning coaches, led by Master Naca Cawanibuka, have a significant opportunity to enhance the players’ fitness during this crucial time.
Jackson highlighted the substantial progress made so far, describing the training as rigorous following a well-deserved break after last season. He mentioned that the Flying Fijians are preparing for an upcoming November tour, while the developmental players have returned in good shape but are now feeling the intensity of the training regimen.
The off-season efforts have been further bolstered by the involvement of seasoned assistant coaches Tim Sampson and Chris Gibbes. Jackson expressed his satisfaction with having both coaches on board, recognizing their extensive experience and knowledge of the Super Rugby competition. Gibbes, who previously was the Hurricanes’ assistant coach, is now serving as the forwards coach for the Drua, while Sampson, a former head coach of the Western Force, is handling the team’s attacking strategies.
Jackson praised their motivation and commitment, noting how quickly they have adapted to the team environment and expressed enthusiasm for being part of the organization. Additionally, the Drua is considering a training trip to Kadavu in December, which aims to foster team bonding and community engagement both on and off the field. Jackson reiterated the importance of unity within the team as they prepare for the upcoming season.
