Fijiana Drua Set to Shine: New Faces, Big Challenges in Season Opener!

Drua’s New Stars Ready to Shine Against Waratahs in Thrilling Season Opener!

The Rooster Chicken Fijiana Drua women’s rugby team is set to unveil six new players during their opening match against the Super Rugby Women’s champions, the Waratahs, scheduled for this Friday at Allianz Stadium in Sydney. Among the debutants is Alfreda Fisher, poised to take a position in the back row, and Alowesi Nakoci, a former star of Fijiana 7s, will be starting on the wing. Josivini Naihamu, known for her powerful running, will join returning player Vitalina Naikore in the centers after her previous stint in the NRL.

The team will be led by captain Vika Matarugu from the front row, with Bitila Tawake serving as co-captain from the reserves. This match represents a significant challenge as the Drua seeks to establish themselves at the beginning of the season.

This match follows a pre-season trial against the Brumbies, where the Drua faced a setback, losing 33-52. Despite the result, coach Ifereimi Rawaqa remains optimistic, praising the players’ resilience and the lessons learned during that trial. He believes these experiences will be beneficial as they prepare to take on the Waratahs.

Anticipation is high among fans for a thrilling showcase that emphasizes both the influx of new talent and the team’s dedication to blending emerging players with seasoned veterans. The Drua’s achievements, notably winning the Super W title in 2022 and 2023, provide additional motivation as they aim to reclaim their competitive edge this season.

With an emphasis on collective growth and unity, there is a positive outlook for the Fijiana Drua as they embark on their Super Rugby campaign, intending to leave a significant mark in the realm of women’s rugby.
