The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua 7s team is set to compete in the Fiji Bitter Mataso 7s, taking place at Churchill Park on November 15-16. This marks a significant shift as the Drua embarks on a new preseason strategy under the guidance of head coach Glen Jackson, who aims to inject fresh ideas into the team’s training regimen.
This unexpected return to the sevens format is seen as a way to keep players actively engaged and competitive amid a long preseason, especially with around 25 key players currently touring in Europe. The remainder of the Drua squad has been diligently training in Fiji and will now have the added excitement of participating in upcoming tournaments, starting with the Mataso 7s and continuing into the prestigious Coral Coast 7s in January.
Drua CEO Mark Evans highlighted the positive aspects of this change, noting that sevens rugby brings an enjoyable competitive edge that the players appreciate. “It’s a different approach, really,” Evans explained. He expressed enthusiasm for this strategy, which is designed to maintain momentum and introduce a variety of training experiences for players who aren’t abroad.
Following a solid preseason program extending until the Christmas break, the Drua players will reconvene for six additional weeks of training. Furthermore, Evans mentioned that they are contemplating participation in 10s tournaments, which could enhance the diversity of their preparations as they gear up for the upcoming season.
This innovative approach reflects the Drua team’s commitment to keeping their players active and engaged, fostering not only skill development but also team spirit and morale as they prepare for their future challenges.
This strategic shift has the potential to reinvigorate the squad and bring about exciting opportunities, not only for player development but also for creating a competitive environment that fans can eagerly support.
