The Rooster Chicken Fijiana Drua Women kicked off the 2025 Super Rugby Women’s season with a triumphant performance, defeating the defending champions, the NSW Waratahs, with a score of 23-17 at Allianz Stadium. This victory not only marks a thrilling start to the new season but also provides a measure of redemption after their defeat to the Waratahs in last year’s grand final.

In a remarkable opening to the match, centre Vitalina Naikore made history by scoring the fastest try in Super Rugby Women’s history, crossing the line just 10 seconds after the initial kick-off. Luisa Tisolo played a pivotal role, converting the try to establish a quick 7-0 lead for the Drua.

Throughout the first half, the Drua maintained relentless pressure on their opponents, effectively capitalizing on penalties. Tisolo added another penalty to their score, extending the lead. The Waratahs responded mid-half with a try from Maya Stewart, but Tisolo swiftly countered, ensuring the Drua retained a commanding 20-5 lead by halftime. Notably, debutant Josivini Naihamu displayed her strength and skill by contributing with a try that solidified their advantage.

As the second half began, the Waratahs sought to stage a comeback, scoring early with Bridie O’Gorman crossing the line. However, missed conversions compounded their struggles, leaving them trailing. Despite their efforts, the Drua’s resilient defense and strategic gameplay, highlighted by Tisolo’s additional penalties, allowed them to maintain the lead and secure the victory.

Coach Ifereimi Rawaqa expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, recognizing the valuable contributions from both experienced players and newcomers. The successful integration of young talents like Naihamu with seasoned athletes such as Naikore has created a promising dynamic for the Drua’s season. The team’s next challenge is against the Reds, where they aim to build on this strong start.

This impressive victory has sparked renewed enthusiasm among fans, reinforcing the Drua’s commitment to excellence and the advancement of women’s rugby in Fiji and the Pacific region. The combination of experience and youthful energy within their squad bodes well for their future as they compete in a challenging league.
