The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua is gearing up for the 2025 Shop N Save Super Rugby competition and aims to assemble a robust squad. Forwards coach Chris Gibbes has pinpointed the need to strengthen their No. 6 and No. 8 positions. However, he clarified that they are not considering reshuffling Te Ahiwaru Cirikidaveta, affectionately known as “Big T,” for these roles as they have alternative strategies in mind.
Welcoming back flanker Joseva Tamani, who has returned after a brief stint with French club Colomiers, adds depth to the squad. The 27-year-old is expected to significantly contribute in one of the two key positions, having previously impressed with his agility and ability to convert loose balls into scoring opportunities during his 13 appearances in the 2022 season.
Young talent Isoa Tuwai is another promising player looking to impact the team. Currently playing for Suva Rugby in the Skipper Competition and Farebrother, Tuwai’s journey from inside centre to flanker has caught the attention of rugby enthusiasts. Gibbes expressed confidence in their recruitment, noting that players like Tamani and Tuwai are versatile and can fill crucial spots effectively.
The Drua’s resilience is commendable, as they have reached the Shop N Save Super Rugby quarterfinals in consecutive years. Their efforts will continue as they prepare for the upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens scheduled for January 16-18 next year, where they are expected to showcase a strong lineup.
Aspiring young players such as Isikeli Rabitu, Philip Baselala, Aisea Nawai, and several others are eager to earn a spot on the Drua 7s team. The team will face a challenging lineup, including Seattle Barbarians and All Blacks 7s, demonstrating the competitive spirit that drives Fiji’s rugby heritage.
As the Drua takes a break for the holidays, it highlights the balance between rigorous training and family time, setting the stage for a strong start to the new year.
This is an exciting time for the Fijian Drua, as they build upon their past successes and the wealth of young talent emerging, making the future of Fijian rugby bright with potential.
