Swire Shipping Fijian Drua’s head coach, Glen Jackson, is focusing on ensuring player freshness as the team gears up to take on the Waratahs in Round 3 of the 2025 Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific. Following a taxing journey back from their match in Napier, New Zealand, Jackson has made significant alterations to the match day lineup, introducing 10 changes.
Among the notable returns is Etonia Waqa, who is set to make his comeback after a long injury layoff, following his promising performance against the Brumbies two weeks prior. The centers, Tuidraki Samusamuvodre and Inia Tabuavou, will remain consistent from the last match, supporting stability in the all-important midfield.
The front row sees some restructuring with Haereiti Hetet stepping in at loosehead prop, Samuela Tawake at tight-head, and team captain Tevita Ikanivere taking on the hooker position. The second row will feature Isoa Nasilasila and Leone Rotuisolia, while the back row will be composed of Joseva Tamani as blindside flanker, Motikiai Murray at openside, and Meli Derenalagi at number 8.
In an effort to elevate the team’s performance, the backline will feature Simione Kuruvoli at halfback and Caleb Muntz as flyhalf. The wings will welcome back Vuate Karawalevu and Ponipate Loganimasi, while Ilaisa Droasese will round out the starting lineup at fullback.
The substitutes have also been thoughtfully selected to provide impactful plays, including Mesulame Dolokoto as backup hooker, Livai Natave at loosehead, and Mesake Doge at tight-head. Waqa adds depth in the locks, and Kitione Salawa will support the loose forwards. Peni Matawalu will cover the halfback position, with Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula available as the flyhalf backup, while Kemu Valetini will serve as a versatile option in the backline.
These strategic player rotations reflect Jackson’s dedication to managing athletes’ fitness levels throughout the grueling Super Rugby season, accommodating tight turnaround times and travel demands. Fans are optimistic about witnessing a revitalized Drua team that combines seasoned players with budding talent, hoping that this blend will lead to heightened performance as the season unfolds. This emphasis on freshness and adaptability underscores the team’s commitment to thriving in the competitive league landscape.
