Swire Shipping Fijian Drua head coach Glen Jackson is putting a significant emphasis on fitness as the team prepares for their Super Rugby Pacific opener against the Brumbies on February 15. With the team recently competing in the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens tournament in Sigatoka, the focus now shifts to their pre-season clash against RFC Los Angeles, which is scheduled for Friday at Churchill Park in Lautoka.
The Drua’s performance in the Coral Coast tournament saw them defeating local champions BLK Lavidi Brothers 8-5 in the Cup quarterfinals and facing a challenging semifinal where they ultimately fell 28-5 to the Fiji men’s rugby sevens team. Jackson expressed satisfaction with the players’ commitment to improving their fitness levels, noting their hard work is starting to pay off.
“It was a tough tournament but I am pleased with the boys and how they played,” Jackson commented. He further remarked that the selection of players was strategic, aimed at giving individuals game time in preparation for the upcoming season.
Hooker Mesulame Dolokoto, returning from injury, echoed the coach’s sentiments, stating that competing in the Coral Coast tournament was refreshing and a valuable challenge for him. Dolokoto is keen to make his mark and secure a position in the main Drua team, emphasizing a willingness to face the challenges ahead.
Jackson is optimistic about the team’s prospects this season, highlighting that hard work and team cohesion will be essential to their success in Super Rugby. The upcoming match against RFC Los Angeles, set to kick off at 3 PM, will provide an opportunity for players to showcase their readiness for the season.
The Drua are clearly setting a positive tone for the future as they continue to work hard and develop as a team, making their supporters eager to see how they will perform as the season progresses. This focus on fitness, teamwork, and resilience reflects a promising atmosphere for both players and fans alike.
