Swire Shipping Fijian Drua’s head coach, Glen Jackson, has announced a major revamp of the team’s lineup prior to their Round 3 match against the Waratahs. Following a demanding return from Napier, New Zealand, and with only six days of preparation, Jackson has implemented 10 changes to the squad. This strategic move aims to mix youthful vigor with experienced players, instilling hope for an improved performance as the Drua strive for their first win of the season.
Key among the alterations is the return of Etonia Waqa, who brings a much-needed boost to the squad following a lengthy injury absence. The center pairing of Tuidraki Samusamuvodre and Inia Tabuavou remains intact, providing stability in midfield. In the forward pack, Jackson has chosen to reintroduce Haereiti Hetet at loosehead prop, with Samuela Tawake in the tighthead position and captain Tevita Ikanivere at hooker. The lock positions will feature Isoa Nasilasila and Leone Rotuisolia, and the back row is composed of Joseva Tamani at blindside flanker, Motikiai Murray at openside flanker, and Meli Derenalagi at number eight.
The backline includes Simione Kuruvoli at halfback teaming up with Caleb Muntz at flyhalf. Supporting them on the wings are Vuate Karawalevu and Ponipate Loganimasi, with Ilaisa Droasese positioned as fullback to complete the starting XV. The bench is equipped with strong options such as Mesulame Dolokoto as backup hooker, Livai Natave at loosehead, and Mesake Doge at tighthead. Etonia Waqa’s versatility allows him to cover locks, and Kitione Salawa contributes additional depth in the loose forwards.
This extensive rotation underscores Jackson’s focus on player fitness and performance amidst the rigorous demands of the Super Rugby season. While the absence of co-captain Frank Lomani and several other injured players poses a challenge, the squad’s depth creates a sense of optimism. Jackson’s trust in the team’s resilience and adaptability suggests that this match against the Waratahs could serve as a pivotal moment in the Drua’s season.
As they head to Allianz Stadium in Sydney to face a challenging opponent, fans eagerly anticipate that the mix of returning players and fresh talent will result in a competitive outing, transforming potential obstacles into valuable experiences for growth.
