Drua's Development Pipeline Keeps Fiji in the World Top 10

Drua’s Development Pipeline Keeps Fiji in the World Top 10

Swire Shipping Fijian Drua chief executive Mark Evans has emphasized the significant impact the Drua has had on the advancement and consistency of Fiji’s national rugby program. This connection is highlighted by the fact that a considerable number of players currently touring with the Fiji Water Flying Fijians in Europe have either played for or moved through the ranks of the Drua.

Evans noted, “If you look at the Drua across the whole piece, it’s around 32 boys touring Europe, with roughly 17 or 18 being either current or former Drua players.” This strong association reinforces the Drua’s foundational goal of enhancing the national team’s performance by providing a sustainable player development pipeline in Fiji.

He pointed out that the results of this initiative are evident, as the Flying Fijians have maintained a world ranking of ninth, a position they have held for the past two to three years, marking it as the most consistent performance from any Fijian national team in recent times. Evans remarked, “At one point, we even reached eighth in the world for about three weeks.”

The influence of the Drua is seen as crucial for the continued growth and stability of Fiji Rugby on the international stage. This collaboration between the Drua and the national team not only develops the players but also fosters a strong, competitive environment that enhances overall performance.

In related comments, head coach Mick Byrne also noted the vital role the Drua plays in the progression of Fiji Rugby, particularly citing the inclusion of numerous Drua players during the recent Autumn Nations Test Series. With 12 Drua players participating in their final test against Ireland, the integration of local talent with experienced international players is crucial for the team’s development and enhances the competitive edge of the national squad.

Byrne expressed optimism for the future of Fijian rugby, stating that this partnership between the Drua and the Flying Fijians is critical for continued success. The blend of skills acquired through professional training alongside the experience gained from playing at a higher level bodes well for the growth of rugby in Fiji.

This synergy is a hopeful sign for the future of Fijian rugby, illustrating the potential for success as they harness local talent and nurture the next generation of players. With ongoing collaboration and development, Fiji rugby is well-positioned for greater achievements in upcoming international competitions.
