Swire Shipping Fijian Drua’s head coach Glen Jackson is determined to elevate Meli Derenalagi into one of the premier blindside flankers in the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific competition. Jackson explained that this ambition was the driving force behind the decision to relieve Derenalagi of his captaincy.
“Meli is fully supportive of this decision, allowing him to focus entirely on his rugby performance,” Jackson noted.
In an exciting development for the team’s leadership structure, Jackson named hooker Tevita Ikanivere and veteran halfback Frank Lomani as co-captains for the upcoming 2025 season. “Both players have demonstrated professionalism on and off the field over the years, making them an excellent choice to lead us,” Jackson said, expressing enthusiasm for the coaching staff’s decision. This will mark the first time the Drua will have co-captains, expected to bring a fresh approach and positive impact on the club.
The announcement of the Drua squad saw some surprising changes as well. Notable omissions include centre Apisalome Vota, Michael Naitokani, and prop Jone Koroiduadua, who has chosen to pursue opportunities in the Major League Rugby competition in the U.S.
Overall, the changes indicate a strategic shift aimed at enhancing the team’s performance and spirit. The appointment of co-captains could foster a collaborative leadership style, which might lead to improved performance and cohesion on the field. Fans eagerly await how these developments unfold in the 2025 season.
