Swire Shipping Fijian Drua head coach Glen Jackson is poised to make significant changes to his squad ahead of the crucial Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific clash against the Highlanders on Saturday. This comes in response to a string of injuries and inconsistent performances, notably with vice-captain and star halfback Frank Lomani ruled out for the season due to a shoulder injury that necessitates surgery.
Jackson expressed his disappointment over Lomani’s situation, stating, “Frank’s pretty gutted. He’s had ongoing issues with his shoulder and this latest setback is tough on him and the club.” In addition to Lomani’s absence, lock Etonia Waqa will miss the match due to being in head injury assessment protocols, while captain Tevita Ikanivere may be rested to allow for deeper squad participation.
In Lomani’s place, hooker Mesulame Dolokoto will take over captaincy duties. Jackson highlighted Dolokoto’s leadership qualities, noting his potential to galvanize the team during this challenging period. “He’s been a great leader for us off the field… he will take over the leadership,” Jackson commented.
After a disappointing loss against the Crusaders, where the Drua exhibited a lack of game management particularly in the first quarter, Jackson seeks a more balanced approach for the upcoming match rather than the six-two bench strategy they employed last week. He emphasized the need for better kicking tactics and overall game management.
On a positive note, Jackson and his coaching team have focused on restoring players’ confidence while alleviating the pressure associated with public expectations. “There’s a bit of tension which is understandable after two playoff years, but we want the boys to enjoy playing the Fijian way again,” he remarked.
With seven matches remaining in the regular season, Jackson stressed that the next three games are critical for the Drua’s playoff aspirations, declaring, “If we can win these next three, we’re back in the top six conversation.” The upcoming clash against the Highlanders is deemed a “must-win” as they prepare for a series of home games crucial to their campaign.
Fans are encouraged to rally behind the team for the game, which will kick off at 7:05 PM at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin. The Drua’s spirit, resilience, and capability to rise to the occasion provide hope it can turn recent challenges into a catalyst for a successful turnaround in the remainder of the season.
