Swire Shipping Fijian Drua’s head coach Glen Jackson is setting high expectations for Meli Derenalagi, aiming for him to become the top blindside flanker in the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific competition. In a recent interview with SUNsports, Jackson explained that Derenalagi’s removal from the captaincy was a strategic decision to allow him to concentrate fully on his performance on the field.
“Meli is on board with us on the decision so he can just focus on his rugby,” Jackson stated.
In an exciting development for the team, Jackson has appointed hooker Tevita Ikanivere and seasoned halfback Frank Lomani as co-captains for the 2025 season. “Both have demonstrated professionalism both on and off the field over the years, making them excellent choices to lead us into the next season,” he added. This marks a first for the Drua, and the coaching staff is enthusiastic about this decision.
However, the announcement also brought unexpected news as center Apisalome Vota, Michael Naitokani, and prop Jone Koroiduadua, who has signed with an American club playing in Major League Rugby, were notably omitted from the squad.
This strategic recalibration within the team may open new pathways for Derenalagi and the newly appointed co-captains to excel and lead the Drua to new heights in the upcoming season. It reflects a commitment to fostering talent and teamwork, ensuring that the team is well-positioned for future challenges.
Overall, the Drua’s leadership changes are poised to create a positive environment where players can thrive and develop, fostering a promising outlook for the 2025 season.
