The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua are currently enjoying a four-day pre-season camp on Kadavu, an experience that showcases the rich cultural heritage of Fiji. The team arrived at Namalata District School, where they will be accommodated during their visit.

Upon arrival, the Drua were warmly welcomed with a traditional ceremony, and they kicked off their stay with a breakfast featuring freshly cooked fish, a local delicacy. Head coach Glen Jackson remarked on the significance of the traditional kava mixing experience, highlighting that many players had never witnessed such practices before. He praised the welcoming nature of the Kadavu people, stating, “The people from Kadavu have been amazing.”

The boat ride to Kadavu was a memorable journey for many players, with mixed experiences due to the lumpy conditions. Jackson noted that while some players squealed with excitement and surprise, the picturesque view during their trip made it a great start to their adventure.

This pre-season camp marks a significant move for the Drua, as it is the first time they have trained away from the mainland, paralleling the Flying Fijians’ preparation for the 2023 Rugby World Cup in Taveuni. The Drua will return to Suva on Friday.

This camp not only allows the team to bond and build camaraderie but also strengthens their connection to Fijian culture, enriching their experience as they prepare for the challenges ahead in the Super Rugby Pacific season.

The Drua’s choice to engage with local traditions and celebrate their heritage during their training camp is a positive reminder of the importance of community and cultural identity in sports.
