The Fijian Drua Women’s rugby team is gearing up to kick off their 2025 Super W season with an exhilarating match against the NSW Waratahs this Friday at Allianz Stadium in Sydney. Head coach Ifereimi Rawaqa has appointed Vika Matarugu as the new captain, taking over from Karalaini Naisewa, who led the team to the finals last year. Matarugu expressed her surprise and pride at being chosen for the leadership position, crediting her selection to her commitment and efforts.

Matarugu will be joined by Vitalina Naikore as vice-captain. Both bring valuable experience to the squad, having been instrumental in the team’s previous achievements, including historic milestones in the Super W. Naikore, in particular, made headlines when she scored three tries in the 2022 finals against the Waratahs, and she has spent the past two seasons competing in the NRLW.

This season, the Drua Women are welcoming six newcomers to their roster, including Olympic bronze medalist Alowesi Nakoci, alongside debutants Alfreda Fisher, Josivini Naihamu, and Salaseini Railumu. This combination of fresh talent and familiar faces like Matarugu and Naikore creates a promising outlook for the team’s performance this season.

The highly anticipated match will be broadcast live on FBC Sports, commencing at 6:05 PM local time. The Drua Women are determined to revitalize their competitive spirit after facing challenges in recent matches, including a pre-season setback against the Brumbies. Coach Rawaqa remains hopeful, emphasizing his players’ resilience and commitment to refining their strategies ahead of the encounter with the Waratahs.

With a dynamic mix of youth and experience, the Drua Women are set not only to strive for on-field success but also to significantly contribute to the advancement of women’s rugby in Fiji and the Pacific. Fans can expect an inspiring season filled with potential as the team embarks on this exciting new chapter.
