The Rooster Chicken Fijian Drua Women’s rugby team is geared up for a crucial match against the NSW Waratahs at Allianz Stadium in Sydney to kick off the 2025 Super Rugby Women’s season. Coach Ifereimi Rawaqa is confident that the team has struck the right balance between seasoned experience and fresh talent, having selected six debutants who are set to bring an energetic dynamic to the squad.

Rawaqa highlighted the team’s rigorous preparations, emphasizing the hard work of his players leading up to the match. “Everyone is working hard, they all put their hands up,” he said, underscoring the selection process that involved assessing players’ commitment and performance during training.

This season, captain Vika Matarugu will lead the team, supported by vice-captain Vitalina Naikore. Rawaqa noted that Matarugu’s experience and leadership, alongside Naikore’s rugby league background, would be instrumental in strengthening the team. Key players Kolora Lomani and Ema Adivitaloga’s return adds further depth, drawing from their previous successes with the team, including recent title victories.

The squad has undergone extensive training, with a particular focus on defensive strategies. The coaching staff has stressed the importance of effective one-on-one tackles to enhance their defensive structure. “We have worked hard on our defence,” Rawaqa commented, expressing hope that these elements would make a difference in their opening round against a challenging Waratahs side, who are the reigning champions.

Fans can expect an exciting kickoff at 6:05 PM, with the Drua Women aiming to start the season strong amidst growing anticipation. The mix of youthful debutants and veteran players signifies a promising outlook for the season, highlighting the team’s commitment to both individual and collective growth.
