The 2025 Super Rugby Women’s competition is set to offer an exciting season, as the Rooster Chicken Fijian Drua Women prepare to host two home matches. Aiming for a top-two finish in the regular season will provide the opportunity for the Drua Women to potentially host a semi-final in Fiji. This season will also mark the inaugural Super Rugby Champions final, where the winning team from Super Rugby W will face off against the champion of New Zealand’s Super Rugby Aupiki.
On March 8, which coincides with International Women’s Day, the Drua will face the Reds in Lautoka at Churchill Park. This event is part of a thrilling double-header, with the match set to start at 1:05 PM, followed by the Drua Men taking on the Chiefs at 3:30 PM. Just a week later, on March 15, the Drua Women will take on the formidable Brumbies Women in a standalone match, kicking off at 3:30 PM.
The season begins for the Fijian Drua Women against the Waratahs in Sydney at Allianz Stadium on February 28, followed by their home games against the Reds and Brumbies. The Drua’s final regular season match will occur away against the Western Force in Perth on March 23.
The semi-finals are scheduled for the weekend of April 5, where the top two ranked teams will host, culminating in the Grand Final on April 12. A crossover final between the champions of Super Rugby Women’s and Super Rugby Aupiki will take place on April 17.
Mark Evans, the chief executive officer of Fijian Drua, expressed excitement about their previous successes, having won Super Rugby Women titles in 2022 and 2023 and reaching the finals in 2024. However, he acknowledges the challenges ahead as the team is currently in a rebuilding phase. With a new interim head coach, Evans aims to develop a deeper player pool and enhance the infrastructure for the Drua Women. Notably, the team will return to pre-season training in early December with improved resources and facilities.
Hosting matches in Fiji is a significant boost for local fans, offering them the chance to support their teams in person. Evans accentuates the importance of playing on International Women’s Day, indicating plans to make it a memorable experience for spectators.
This emerging focus on women’s rugby reflects an uplifting trend in the sport, highlighting the commitment to growth and excellence within the league, and fostering community engagement through exciting local events.
Overall, the 2025 season for the Fijian Drua Women presents a promising landscape brimming with potential achievements and community support, making it a thrilling time for rugby fans in Fiji and beyond.
