The pre-season preparations have concluded, and the excitement is palpable as the 30th season of Super Rugby Pacific commences. The Fijian Drua marks its fifth year with an exhilarating matchup dubbed the ‘Battle of the Pacific’ against Moana Pasifika in Lautoka.

This clash promises to be a highlight of the round, especially if both teams can showcase their dynamic playing styles that reflect the unique skills and flair of Pacific rugby. With fresh talents lining up for both squads, the need to start strong cannot be overstated.

The rivalry between the Drua and Moana Pasifika has been fierce, with the Drua holding a slight edge in their head-to-head record, boasting four victories to two losses. Notably, four of their games have been decided by a narrow margin of seven points or less, highlighting the competitive nature of these encounters.

In terms of club spirit, the Drua was established to provide local talents with the opportunity to forge their professional careers at home, preserving their connections to family and the vibrant Fijian lifestyle. While some players may still attract lucrative foreign offers, an encouraging number of Fijian athletes are now returning home, eager to contribute to their native clubs. Key players such as Mayanavanua, Vakatawa, Fines-Leleiwasa, and Mataele are expected to make significant impacts in this season.

The Drua will be missing some valued contributors as Ikanivere, Masi, Ravutaumada, and Muntz have departed, leaving big shoes to fill. However, the current team is rich in experience with 20 internationals included in the matchday roster, and only three players—Cakobau, Tuwai, and Rabitu—remain untested at the international level, positioned on the bench.

A notable highlight for fans is the return of Virimi Vakatawa, a seasoned 32-test veteran of France’s rugby scene, who is expected to bring a wealth of knowledge back to his roots in Fiji. The Drua’s co-captain, Temo Mayanavanua, a former lock for Lyon and Northampton Saints, adds substantial leadership and experience, especially crucial for their upcoming away games.

The squad’s depth is further bolstered by the addition of Wallaby scrumhalf Issak Fines-Leleiwasa and playmaker Manasa Mataele, both of whom will enhance the backline’s capabilities. Fines-Leleiwasa comes with a strong pedigree from the Brumbies and Western Force, while Mataele’s background with the Crusaders, Force, and Chiefs brings a wealth of competitive experience.

Moana Pasifika, on the other hand, will aim to break their losing streak in Fiji, having narrowly lost their previous encounters. Despite the departure of All Black star Ardie Savea for a sabbatical in Japan, Coach Tana Umaga managed to secure the signing of former All Black Ngani Laumape, who will face off against Vakatawa in what promises to be a thrilling matchup.

The Moana roster includes talents from Samoan and Tongan backgrounds, although they do not match the Drua in terms of overall test experience. Fullback William Havili will celebrate a significant milestone, becoming the first Moana player to reach 50 caps, further adding to the stakes of this encounter.

As the Drua gets ready for their first home game of the season at Churchill Park, accumulating early competition points will be crucial, especially after last year’s slow start. Following this match, they will face the Waratahs in Sydney next week and return home to play the Hurricanes in Lautoka.

Head Coach Glen Jackson emphasizes a week-by-week approach, but acknowledges the necessity of achieving better results on the road to remain in contention for the Top Four. Looking ahead, fans are anticipating a strong performance to continue the Drua’s home winning streak, with the community gathering early to support the team during the pre-game festivities.

The spirit of Fijian rugby and the passion of the Drua community continue to inspire as the team embarks on this season’s journey, hoping for a successful and memorable year.
