Jackson expressed excitement about the intensity of training sessions. “Monday was the biggest buzz I’ve had since being with the Drua. The boys came back refreshed, and training has been intense,” he shared. This competitive spirit has fueled fierce battles for starting positions, notably at fly-half, where young talents Caleb Muntz and Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula are vying for the key number 10 role.
The scrum-half position is also highly contested, with co-captain Frank Lomani leading alongside the promising Philip Baselala. “There’s also strong competition in the loose forwards, which is exciting. We’ve added some great depth on the wings as well. These battles are exactly what we need to keep raising our standards,” Jackson noted.
Unlike previous seasons, the Drua opted for a different pre-season strategy by staying in Fiji instead of engaging in international warm-up matches. They conducted an internal trial match in Lautoka and faced Rugby FC Los Angeles, allowing the squad to bond more effectively. “In previous years, we’ve won our pre-season games but struggled early in the season. So, this year, we focused on keeping the squad together,” Jackson explained.
The upcoming month is set to be a significant challenge for the Drua, as they face formidable opponents including the Brumbies, Hurricanes, and Waratahs. “Our preparation must be spot-on. We’re excited for the challenge,” Jackson added, acknowledging that final selections for the match will be difficult.
