The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua is gearing up for a competitive showing in the 2025 Shop N Save Super Rugby season by assembling a strong squad. Forwards coach Chris Gibbes has pinpointed the need to enhance their lineup, specifically in the No. 6 and No. 8 positions, as they prepare for the upcoming season.
While there has been speculation about reshuffling current players, such as Te Ahiwaru Cirikidaveta, commonly referred to as ‘Big T’, Gibbes has made it clear that the team is looking to bring in new talent rather than adjusting existing player roles.
One notable addition is flanker Joseva Tamani, who returns after a stint with the French club Colomiers. At 27 years old, Tamani is recognized for his agility and ability to seize loose balls, making him a valuable asset for the team. He previously made 13 appearances for the Fijian Drua in the 2022 season.
Additionally, Isoa Tuwai, a promising young player from the Drua development academy, is also expected to make a significant impact in these key positions. Tuwai has shown exceptional skill, transitioning from inside centre to flanker while playing for Suva Rugby in local competitions.
Gibbes expressed confidence in both Tamani and Tuwai, noting the benefit of players being versatile and capable of occupying multiple positions on the field. He emphasized the importance of bolstering the team’s strengths as they strive to build on their success from reaching the Shop N Save Super Rugby quarterfinals for two consecutive years.
In a bid to further strengthen the squad, the Drua is preparing to participate in the upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens tournament, taking place at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka from January 16-18. Several aspiring young players, including Isikeli Rabitu, Philip Baselala, and Aisea Nawai, are eager to showcase their talents for a chance to join the Drua 7s team.
As the Drua players take a much-deserved break during the holidays, they will reconvene for training post-New Year, with aspirations for another excellent season ahead. With a focus on talent development and strategic recruitment, the team remains optimistic about their future in competitive rugby.
This proactive approach highlights the Drua’s commitment to building a robust, dynamic team, and the enthusiasm surrounding their upcoming season is palpable, promising an exciting year for both players and fans alike.
