After a disappointing season opener against Moana Pasifika last Saturday in Lautoka, Fijian Drua head coach Glen Jackson has expressed determination to improve in their next fixture. Reflecting on the previous match, Jackson noted, “We won three quarters of that game, but we failed big time in the first quarter. Havili did a great job with the wind. He kicked three 50-22’s behind us, which sort of put us on the back foot, and we were 21 – 0 after 15 minutes.”

Looking ahead to their encounter with the Waratahs, Jackson conveyed enthusiasm about the matchup. “We are super excited to play the Waratahs. They are probably the one team everybody likes to play. There’s nothing better in a six-day turnaround for our men to muscle up in the Tahs half, and we’ll see how that will go on Friday,” he said.

The team is fully prepared as they aim to tackle the challenge posed by the Waratahs, known for their impressive backline featuring world-class players. Jackson emphasized the importance of the forward pack, stating, “We’ve just got to front up in the forward pack. They’ve got an amazing backline. So it’s got to be won in the forward pack, and our boys are fired up for it.”

In a bid to boost their chances, the Drua have made six changes to their starting lineup. Lanky Josefa Tamani and Motikai Murray will take on the roles of flankers, while seasoned halfback and co-captain Frank Lomani will pair up with flyhalf Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula. Additionally, Taniela Rakuro replaces Manasa Mataele on the blind wing, and Isikeli Rabitu will start at inside center.

Jackson noted that although there are “a couple of bumps and bruises,” they have selected players who are ready to compete against a team that recently secured a strong victory. He mentioned the existing rivalry between the Drua and the Waratahs, highlighting that both teams are expected to come out fighting.

Last year, the Drua came agonizingly close to defeating the Waratahs in Sydney, narrowly losing 29 – 24 in a thrilling match. They are eager to change their away game record this season and secure their first win outside of home territory. The match against the NSW Waratahs is set to kick off at 8:35 pm at Allianz Stadium in Sydney, marking a potentially pivotal moment for the Drua as they strive for improvement and a new chapter in their Super Rugby campaign.
