The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua rugby team is currently embracing a unique pre-season experience on Kadavu Island, where they will hold a four-day training camp as part of their Super Rugby Pacific preparations. Arriving early yesterday at Namalata District School, the players are comfortably settled in for their stay, which includes a warm, traditional welcome ceremony that highlights the rich culture of the area.
Coach Glen Jackson expressed enthusiasm about the experience, noting that the team’s introduction to local customs, especially the preparation of kava, was truly special. The Drua enjoyed a hearty breakfast of fresh fish, a local delicacy, further enhancing their connection to Kadavu.
Some players found the boat journey to Kadavu particularly memorable, with the varied sea conditions providing an exciting experience. “We were looked after beautifully in an amazing boat… it’s been a great start to the trip so far,” said Jackson, reflecting on the wonderful weather and the scenic views the journey offered.
This unique off-mainland training initiative marks a significant shift for the Drua, who previously conducted pre-season training on the mainland. This move mirrors the Flying Fijians’ successful preparation for the recently held Rugby World Cup in Taveuni.
The Drua team will return to Suva on Friday, concluding what is set to be a refreshing and culturally enriching experience that not only prepares them for the competitive season ahead but also fosters a deeper appreciation for their Fijian heritage.
This pre-season retreat is a promising step for the team, showcasing their commitment to developing both their athletic skills and community connections. Such experiences can enhance team dynamics and provide a positive boost as they gear up for the challenges of the upcoming season.
