Iosefo Masi, a standout center for Swire Shipping Fijian Drua, is set to return to action in the upcoming 2025 Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific season. Masi shared that he is currently in the second week of training with the team, expressing enthusiasm about his recovery. The 26-year-old had been sidelined due to a knee injury sustained during the Pacific Nations Cup, which prevented him from participating in the PNC final against Japan and the subsequent European Tour in November.
Joining Masi in his return is Joe Tamani, a backrower who has recently concluded a year-long stint with Colomiers Rugby Club in the French ProD2 competition. Tamani, known as “Smokin’ Joe,” has expressed his satisfaction with the rigorous seven-week pre-season training, noting significant improvements in fitness levels among the squad, particularly for those who arrived in less than optimal shape. Tamani also recalled his previous experiences with the Drua during the 2023 Super Rugby Pacific season, where the team reached the quarterfinals, and his Test debut for the Flying Fijians against Samoa.
Frank Lomani, co-captain of the Drua, remains optimistic about the future of the Flying Fijians, especially with the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia on the horizon. After the team’s significant victory over Wales in Cardiff, Lomani believes they are in a strong position leading up to the World Cup. He emphasized the importance of returning to the Drua setup and properly preparing for the new Super Rugby Pacific competition, expressing eagerness for their first game in February.
Overall, the Fijian Drua team is gearing up for an exciting season ahead, bolstered by the return of key players and a solid team dynamic aimed at achieving success both domestically and on the international stage. This positive spirit reflects the resilience and determination within the squad, indicating a bright future for Fijian rugby.
