The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua displayed promising performance in their first pre-season match of the Shop N Save Supermarket Super Rugby Pacific season, despite suffering a 47-31 loss to the Chiefs in a thrilling encounter.
The Drua began the match with a strong intent, showcasing their physicality and attacking spirit, responding effectively each time the Chiefs scored. Motikiai Murray was the first to put points on the board, scoring in the 11th minute from close range off a lineout following a penalty, thus leveling the game after the Chiefs’ initial try.
Although the Chiefs regained the lead shortly after, the Drua’s ability to find space on the flanks was evident, with Ilaisa Droasese successfully crossing the line in the 17th minute to keep the score competitive. The Chiefs quickly answered back, but the Drua delivered one of the match’s highlights in the 31st minute when Joseva Tamani scored following a well-executed break and offload from former Chiefs utility Manasa Mataele.
As the first half concluded, the Chiefs held a 33–21 lead. They extended their advantage with another try shortly after halftime, but the Drua responded swiftly; new signing Iosefo Namoce marked his debut by scoring just two minutes later, emphasizing the growing competition for positions within the team.
Despite facing increased pressure from the Chiefs, the Drua held their ground, with Tamani sealing his brace in the 77th minute to conclude the scoring for the match.
Looking ahead, the Drua will face the Skipper select side next Friday at Churchill Park in Lautoka, where they will aim to build on the positives from their first pre-season outing. The team’s resilience against the formidable Chiefs showcases their potential as they prepare for the upcoming season.
