The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua is gearing up for the 2025 Shop N Save Super Rugby season by focusing on strengthening their squad, particularly in the No.6 and No.8 positions. Forwards coach Chris Gibbes emphasized that while Te Ahiwaru Cirikidaveta, known as ‘Big T’, won’t be reshuffled to fill these spots, the team has other talented players in mind.
The Drua have welcomed back flanker Joseva Tamani after his stint with French club Colomiers. Tamani, at 27 years old, is recognized as an asset for the team, having shown his skills as an agile loose forward during his previous 13 appearances in the 2022 season. He is noted for his exceptional speed and ability to pick up loose balls, making him a key player for the upcoming season.
In addition to Tamani, young talent Isoa Tuwai is expected to contribute significantly to the team. Having transitioned from inside centre to flanker, Tuwai has impressed rugby fans with his abilities while playing for Suva Rugby in the Skipper Competition and Farebrother. Gibbes expressed confidence in both players, highlighting their versatility and potential to enhance the team’s performance.
Looking ahead, the Drua are eager to build on their recent success, as they reached the Shop N Save Super Rugby quarterfinals for two consecutive years. The team plans to field a strong squad for the upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, from January 16-18 next year. Aspiring youngsters, including Isikeli Rabitu, Philip Baselala, and Aisea Nawai, among others, will have the chance to showcase their talents in hopes of making the Drua 7s team.
As the Drua take a short break to relax with family and friends, they are expected to return to training with renewed determination in the new year, aiming to elevate their game for the challenges ahead.
This article encapsulates the ongoing preparations for a new season in rugby, highlighting not only the acquisition of seasoned players but also the nurturing of young talent. With a strong roster in the making, the Fijian Drua’s future looks promising as they aspire to excel in upcoming competitions.
